Selamat datang and welcome!

USM is proud to introduce the ITS-USM Nusatenggara Internship Programme (NUSA), a one-of-its-kind collaboration with Surabaya’s renowned Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), a leading institution for science and technology in Indonesia.

To honor our partnership with ITS, USM warmly welcomes a select few of its students to carry out their internship for five months in the beautiful island of Penang. From the 1st of April to the 31st of August every year, ITS undergraduates who want to do an internship in Computer Science or Informatics will have the opportunity to do so with world-renowned toy company and industry partner Mattel (creator of Barbie, Hot Wheels, and many others) or in USM with its International Mobility and Collaboration Centre (IMCC) or National Advanced IPv6 Center (NAv6).

In order to be selected for the program, students will have to apply for ITS’s International NUSA Program through the International Office and select USM as their destination. Once you have passed the interview and provided the necessary documentation, those chosen to do their internship with Mattel will undergo a second interview. Once you’ve been selected by ITS and briefed by the IMCC team, you’re all set to go! (Students are required to arrange their own flight tickets, visa, and accommodation, with guidance provided by IMCC)

The ITS-USM Nusatenggara Internship Programme aims to instill adaptability and discipline in students, through the honing of transferable skills like leadership and communication. To ensure a multicultural and holistic experience, the programme is divided into two components—the internship with the selected center on weekdays, and a cultural aspect at IMCC on the weekends. Those interning at Mattel will face tasks like ___, while those interning at USM will be working alongside different teams and colleagues to do tasks like website creation and back-end development.

Over the weekends, interns will engage in fun activities with the IMCC team and student buddies like touring around the island, playing sports together, and experiencing Malaysian culture. Interns will be assessed on their performance in tasks provided by their internship supervisor, as well as their character during the cultural activities. Interns will also be required to keep a log book detailing the tasks carried out during the internship, and will undergo a final evaluation in August.

Kickstarted in 2023, the program has been met with success.

"I really enjoyed the programme. It was very cool to hang out with people from different countries, and we all had fun working together. In IMCC, I had to develop and maintain a website, do video editing, and I also had to learn to work with developers, lecturers, and other students to carry out my work. It improved my communication skills a lot, and I learned to see things from different perspectives. I also had a lot of fun during the tour in Georgetown since we got to try a lot of tasty Malaysian food!"

"I couldn't be happier to have been a part of this programme! I did my internship at the National Advanced IPv6 Center (NAv6), and my supervisor gave me the task of designing a website for computer science lecturers. It was very challenging, but my supervisor was with me every step of the way and guided me through it. I learned many things and gained a lot of valuable real-world experience. I also had loads of fun with the IMCC buddies, especially when we went cycling. Overall, it was a great experience, and I hope I can visit Malaysia again soon!"
